“Mallory. Mallory. Mallory!”

“Ah! I’m up—what?” I blinked at an annoyed-looking Alex, who sat in the driver’s seat of a car.

I looked around—I was in Gladys’s Volvo. Which was parked in my driveway. And it was dark. Then I remembered: well-endowed dead body, witch mortician, succubi—

“You snore.”

“Do not.” I frowned at him and did a quick drool check.

“Okay. You’re home.”

He looked a little ragged around the edges, and I squinted at him, looking for any signs that those little wispy spirit boogers were flitting around or clinging to his neck. I couldn’t see anything, but he definitely looked tired. “You wanna crash on the sofa?”

“I’ll just sleep at the office tonight.”

“Right—on the futon. Where do you live again?” I tried to remember what part of town his real place was—but now that I thought on it, I wasn’t sure I knew. He seemed to practically live at his office. “Wait, you do have a home, don’t you?”

His eyes crinkled in amusement. “I have a home. Out southwest, in Dripping Springs. It’s more of a weekend place these days, and the traffic just gets worse every year—but the neighborhood is still pretty quiet.”

I nodded. It was good he had a quiet place to hang out, recover, be himself. He seemed the kind of guy who could use that. I shook my head. “Right. You’re probably ready to get to bed. Thanks for driving. What time is our appointment tomorrow—today—with Mrs. Dyson?”

“Not till two. Get some rest. I’ll pull the other golem names from the rolls, and you can have a look on the way. The rest…well, we’ll chat about the rest tomorrow. Get some sleep tonight.” I got out and was about to close the door when he added, “But set your alarm and turn up the volume.”

I saluted him and moved my tired rear in the direction of the front door. I was walking into the house before I heard the Volvo reverse out of the drive.

“What took you so long? What happened?” Wembley met me in the entryway. He was wearing a brown velour robe that had seen better days, but at least it was snugly tied.

“You really have lost some weight.” I needed to quit commenting on it or the guy would get a complex, but I was tired and the filter between my brain and my mouth was sketchy.

“Been training. I told you that. What happened?”

“Right. Um, basically? He had his magic life juice sucked out.”

Wembley crossed his arms. “Those were not Star’s words.”

“I can’t remember, and I’m tired.” The words came out whinier than I would have liked. But I was tired. I straightened. “Wait. Do you know Star?”

“Quick whiskey in the kitchen?”

I didn’t hesitate, just turned on my heel and headed to the kitchen. I’d discovered a bottle of Johnny Walker Black stashed in the back of a cupboard at my old place when I’d been having a pretty rough day. I’d given it a try, and discovered that vamp-me liked the stuff. I’d never been much of a whiskey drinker before my transformation.
